RESUMO

Prostate carcinoma is currently the third cause of cancer death among the male population, showing a clear trend to increase in terms of the number of cases detected over the last few years. 180 clinical reports of patients diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer since 1983 were revised. The study included 60 cases with a correct extension diagnosis, as well as clinical and analytical follow up. Patients were divided into 3 groups based on the treatment received: maximum androgen blockade (group A), ablative treatment with diethylstilbestrol or orchiectomy (group B), and patients with other treatment (chemotherapy). Survival results were compared with due consideration to the prognostic factors. The comparative statistical analysis done on patients included in group A and B relative to age at diagnosis, time interval between onset of symptoms and diagnosis, analytical data at time of diagnosis, duration of treatment response and overall survival yielded significant differences in the variables studied. No conclusive data can be drawn from the results of our series as to whether treatment with maximum androgen blockade is superior to ablative treatment, therefore it is still necessary to carry out further studies to define which is the best therapeutical tool for use in prostate cancer.

RESUMO

Platelet activating factor is involved in warm ischemic damage. We studied the effect of the PAF receptor antagonist BN 52021 in an experimental model of 60 min of renal warm ischemia in which the left kidney was flushed with Euro-Collins solution and a right nephrectomy was performed. Eighty Wistar rats were divided into a sham-operated group, two control groups, and four study groups, according to the dosage and route of BN 52021 administration. BN 52021 was used in the flush solution at concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/ml, or intravenously prior to ischemia at 5 and 10 mg/kg body weight. Creatinine clearance per 100 g body weight, fractional sodium excretion, and conventional histology were studied. Rats that received BN 52021 intravenously showed a significantly higher creatinine clearance than controls. Intravenous BN 52021 produced a higher acceleration of renal function recovery at 10 mg/kg than at 5 mg/kg body weight. Conventional histology was better in animals that received BN 52021 at 10 mg/kg body weight than in controls. Addition of BN 52021 to Euro-Collins flushing solution showed no protective effect. We conclude that intravenous BN 52021 shows a renal protective effect against warm ischemia.

RESUMO

Presentation of a case of prostatic utriculus cyst which due to its size and the patient's history suggested a differential diagnosis with a urethral or vesical diverticulum. Awareness of frequent association to urethral malformations and azoospermia would be very useful when choosing a treatment strategy in such cases.

RESUMO

Renal Vein Thrombosis is an uncommon entity associated to various clinical conditions which develop in hypercoagulant states. The paper describes one case of idiopathic thrombosis of the renal vein in an adult patient, also making a review of the literature on this clinical syndrome and its diagnostic and therapeutic aspects.

RESUMO

A case of a female patient with bladder leiomyoma associated to uterus containing several leiomyomatous nodules and polycystic ovaries is presented. The diagnostic convenience that ecography can provide, showing neoformations and their definition with regard to neighbouring organic structures, is highlighted. The existing relationship between uterine leiomyomas and estrogens is outlined, as well as the action of GnRH agonists on such leiomyomas after long-term therapy.
